There's a growing trend of escalating prices for Atherton bagpipes on the secondary market. In some cases these instruments are being sold for more than 50% over what they would cost direct from the me-- with no warranty or any other value added. I want to be clear that I do not support the practice of price manipulation at the expense of the piping community. This isn't capitalism, it's just old fashioned greed. The exorbitant prices that are being asked for my instruments are putting them outside the reach of most pipers while at the same time they are giving a false impression that my current pricing, for an identical instrument, is the same. Perhaps fifty years from now when Atherton pipes are no longer being made, the inflated prices may be justified by collectors. It is also a mystery why a piper would spend a few thousand dollars more for a few year's old set of Atherton Pipes when they can contact me for a new set at a far lower cost. It is equally unclear what a used pipe dealer does to the pipes that warrants a $2,000 increase in price.
